Understanding hydrogen water: research status, measurable values and the AWAKE range

Hydrogen water is drinking water with molecular hydrogen (H₂) dissolved in it. Around this beverage there is a growing body of research on one side and a market with very different products and promises on the other. This page keeps the two apart.

    01

    Research first

A count describes how often a topic has been published on. It says nothing about how robust the individual papers are, in whom they were carried out, or which endpoints they recorded. We state it with its source and reference date so that you can check it yourself.

    02

    Terms and measurable values

Before any provider speaks, it is worth looking at which values can be described on a product at all. There are few of them, and none of them says anything about an effect:

    Basics

    What hydrogen water is

We do not tell you what hydrogen water does for you. We show you what has been studied, how robust those studies are, and how you can place a product technically. The decision is yours.

H₂ is a colourless, odourless gas that dissolves in water in small amounts. Chemically the water stays water: no new compound forms, the gas is simply distributed within it, similar to carbon dioxide in sparkling water but in a far smaller quantity.

There are several technical production routes. A common one is electrolysis, where electricity splits water into hydrogen and oxygen. Introducing hydrogen gas directly under pressure is also possible. Ready-to-drink products are charged and sealed at filling.

Measurable values: what a product can actually be assessed on

Before any provider speaks, it is worth looking at which values can be described on a product at all. There are few of them, and none of them says anything about an effect:

AWAKE can with water and ice
    1. 01

Concentration in PPM: describes how much hydrogen is dissolved at the time of filling. It is a value in the beverage, not an outcome in a person.

    2. 02

Container and tightness: hydrogen is a very small molecule and escapes through some plastics. Aluminium and glass with a tight closure are gas-tight.

    3. 03

Time of measurement: a figure without a reference point cannot be placed. What counts is always the provider's statement for the specific product.

    4. 04

Preparation route: with a ready-to-drink beverage the provider sets the value at filling; with home preparation the result depends on the device and the handling.

None of these values is a statement about what a beverage does in the body. They are checkpoints for the product description, nothing more.

    Research

What the research offers and where it stops

The section below sorts the research by level of evidence. It sits deliberately before any product information, because it limits it: a publication count says something about research activity, but nothing about a benefit for you. Studies in cell cultures or animals do not transfer to people, and a small human study is no basis for a recommendation. So read the levels for what they are: a classification of robustness, not a list of outcomes.

H2 AWAKE and the two container formats

AWAKE is a ready-to-drink hydrogen beverage from H2 Vital GmbH, based in Germany. It is offered in two container formats: a can and a glass bottle.

    Provider statements

    • The provider quotes a technical value of more than 11 PPM of dissolved hydrogen for the product.
    • The provider states that production takes place in Germany.
    • The provider offers the beverage ready to drink, so without a device, tablet or home preparation.
    • The provider uses cans and glass as containers and gives the gas properties of hydrogen as the reason.
