Since the groundbreaking study by Ohsawa et al. (2007) in the renowned journal Nature Medicine, research on molecular hydrogen (H₂) has grown exponentially. As of 2025, there is a large and growing body of research.

What is oxidative stress?
To understand the effect of molecular hydrogen, we first need to explain oxidative stress. In every cell of your body, a constant balancing act takes place:
- Oxidation: Oxygen is needed for energy production in the mitochondria. As by-products, free radicals are formed – highly reactive molecules with unpaired electrons.

Chronic, low-grade inflammation („silent inflammation") is a hallmark of many lifestyle-related diseases. Key inflammatory markers are:
- TNF-α (tumour necrosis factor alpha): A cytokine that triggers inflammatory responses
- IL-6 (interleukin-6): Promotes acute inflammation and fever
- NF-κB: A transcription factor regarded as the „master switch" for inflammatory genes
Several studies have shown that regular intake of H₂ water can reduce these markers:
- Kajiyama et al. (2008): Reduction of oxidative stress and inflammatory markers in patients with type 2 diabetes
- Ishibashi et al. (2012): Improvement of inflammatory markers in rheumatoid arthritis

Is molecular hydrogen scientifically recognised?
Research on H₂ is serious and draws on a large, growing body of evidence. The FDA has classified H₂ as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe). However, the research is still young, and larger, long-term studies are needed.
Why are there still no health claims for hydrogen water?
The EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) grants health claims only on the basis of extensive scientific evidence with clearly defined cause-and-effect relationships. H₂ research is promising, but not yet at the level of evidence required for official health claims.
